A king´s dream became reality
In the year 1869 the King of Bavaria, Ludwig II, started to build the castle on the grounds of the former castles of Vorder- and Hinterhohen-
The new castle, Neuschwanstein, with its impressive outline, its many turrets and steep gables, was meant to resemble a castle of the Middle Ages. The construction was stopped, however, when the king suddenly died.
Until the king's death 16 rooms had been completed. The rooms, including the Musicians Hall (Sängersaal), the Coronation Hall (Thronsaal), the king's private rooms and an artificial grotto are open to the public daily all the year round. The murals, paintings and carvings represent scenes from the lives of the medieval knights, which were the topic of Wagners operas.
King Ludwigs dream castle is situated above the Alpsee, a beautiful lake, which the sportive king often swam from one end to the other. This unique building, the result of the uncommon pride and phantastical imagination of the monarch, attracts thousands of visitors every year.
A never ending dream against a breathtaking background, that is Neuschwanstein castle. Do go there and take a look yourselfes!
